Welcome to the sfia-position-description-tool wiki!

What is this tool?

This tool was created by the IT group at NIWA in order to speed up the creation of position descriptions. Technical staff at NIWA often have a wide range of skills and responsibilities that are not easily characterised by a traditional job title like Systems Engineer or Software Developer. We found that staff were working across a wide range of IT skills including governance, strategy, design, development, implementation, operations etc. So how do we create a job description that captures the breadth of awesomeness that we are looking for?

The Skills Framework for the Information Age can be found at www.sfia-online.org. It provides a range of key terms across categories of IT including strategy, change, development etc. Many of the terms are compatible with ITIL - another widely used IT framework. For each term, there is a range of autonomy levels that represent growth in experience and capability for the role.
