I have attempted to read the following to understand if_/3, and it would seem that there is something incredibly fundamental that I am not understanding. Embarrassingly, I have read the following to help try to understand it:

Onto my specific problem, I am trying to find the max length substring with nonrepeating characters in a list 🙄, and am finding myself quite humbled. I have figured out how to generate subsets, but I have not been able to figure out how to argmax them. I have not even been able to figure out how to get the max of a list!

Ok, I think part of my surprise is I was expecting the answer to simply be Max=3., I forgot about backtracking entirely.

Apparently if_/3 has managed

I'm still not sure why 3 was not included in any of the goals, though!

We can simplify the issue by trying smaller queries; even ground queries suffice to show mistakes in the definition. For instance, here are queries and answers that show that the definition is too general, it succeeds for cases that are not intended:

   true, unexpected.

To break it down further, let's insert the most specific goal false/0 to specialize the definition (also note that you should get a singleton warning for the first clause you posted, so I am changing Max to _ in the first clause):

list_max([], _).
list_max([X|Xs], Max) :-
        if_(clpz_t(#Max #< #X),
            list_max(Xs, X),
            (false,list_max(Xs, Max))).

In other words, we have:

list_max([], _).
list_max([X|Xs], Max) :-

And even this extremely specialized definition is still too general:

Obviously, key constraints are missing from even this highly specialized fragment of the relation, notably the essential relation between X, Max, and the maximum of Xs. A correct definition must not yield unintended solutions, I recommend to start from this fragment and ensure that it describes only intended solutions (soundness), and then generalize it so that it describes all intended solutions (completeness).

This is a great point, and when you put it like that, part of the problem becomes very obvious. I was struggling with if_/3 so much I think I just completely forgot how the rest of Prolog worked.

For instance, why does if_/3 require a predicate that is arrity one larger than normal? How does one define an operator or predicate that satisfies this? What are the legal syntaxes that may go in the if_/3 expression?

So for instance, I have been (quite happily) indoctrinated that I should be using clpz when possible for numerical comparison. So, I was quite shocked when I saw this:

perhaps the third argument was rewritten on term expansion by if_/3.

I figured, perhaps I need to define the interaction myself, so I tried:

Sweat began pouring down my face. I realized that the value had to be true or false, not 1 or 0. Which meant... I was going to have to use if_/3 inside my #>/3 definition 😰 😰 😰

Finally, I discovered clpz_t, which managed to get the programming at least parsing correctly.

Now, if you have gotten this far, you are probably cringing at the obvious logical mistakes in the code. But my working memory was entirely consumed with trying to get the if_/3 to simply parse correctly to the point that I had completely forgotten about the backtracking mechanism, basic logic!

clpz_t/2 follows the design of @librarianmage, and was added after the discussion in issue #2225 (comment). Note that library(clpz) also provides (#<)/3 and (#=)/3 for use with library(reif). We considered it more appropriate, at least at that time, to subsume further constraints with the single additional predicate clpz_t/2 instead of providing dedicated individual predicates for more arithmetic constraints.

As the need arises, other design variants may be worth considering again! Also for this reason, I am very grateful for such experience reports and concerns raised in discussions, thank you a lot!

It was a humbling experience that I still have a lot to learn and that I still have a lot of baggage from procedural programming, which is why I resolved to invest in some books 😁 (and I will use any excuse to get more books!). It has also made me feel very grateful for this community existing, because modern Prolog resources are comparatively scarce -- and often wrong!

This problem (the max length substring problem) raises many interesting questions for which definitive answers are hard to come by about how to approach the problem.

1. For instance, should only a single answer be returned? To return only a single answer, must I use the cut operator, or is there a different way using a clean representation? Or should only the first answer represent the max length substring and the rest discarded by convention?
2. Should the problem be split into parts of 1) generating all substring lengths, 2) measuring all substring lengths, 3) getting the max substring length OR should it all be done at once? (Note the procedural language I am still using!)

If the problem should be split into parts, it seems to indicate there must be a technique for "converting the results of backtracking into a list". findall/3 seems to do this, but (for an outsider) the syntax of findall/3 is difficult to determine, even looking at the source code.

However, logically, "converting the results of backtracking into a list" seems like it would be a non-monotonic operation. For instance, ?- findall(Expression, Predicate, Xs) -- it doesn't seem possible to infer Expression and Predicate from Xs. So, mentally, do I group findall/3 with the cut operator -- should be avoided at all costs?

Hopefully it doesn't sound like I am complaining, I am overjoyed at this new landscape, I hope my "fresh off the boat" questions and enthusiasm are not too exhausting!

I will say that these experiences have cemented in my mind the extreme importance of the ISO standard. There are so many things to juggle when first learning the language that discovering you are using an example from a non-conforming Prolog example is very frustrating and it feels like you have wasted your time-- you basically just need to throw the resource away because it will just add confusion.

You could just use list_max from library(lists) I guess, but if you really want to implement this with if_/3 and clpz_t/3 then here it is:

Even better, with if_/3 and clpz_t/3 there you are really just implementing the functor max/2 from library(clpz). And you are also just doing a foldl here, so we can shorten this to:

list_max_clpz2_(X, Max0, Max) :-

This gives clearer answers and is probably more performant too:

These are great examples, and great points. So, as silly as this example is, hopefully my experience report on the difficult with this problem makes some sense. Let's look at the tasks involved with solving the "max nonrepeating substring" problem:

• describe all non repeating substrings of a string
• describe the lengths of those strings
• describe the maximum length given the strings and substrings

First of all, to your point, I completely overlooked both list_max/2 and max/2. max/2 doesn't show up on the scryer.pl search for some reason

and list_max/2 was at the very end and I just didn't see it :(

However, part of the exercise here is that once I had written an implementation for list_max/2, I would need to adapt it for substringlist_maxsubstringlen/2, and to me, understanding if_/3 seems quite essential for comparison.

Your point about foldl/3 is excellent, and I agree that is the way to go -- unfortunately, I could not figure out the syntax of foldl/3, either!! Because I did not know about max/2, I had to write my reducing predicate using if_/3, but I couldn't figure out if_/3 either -- but it wasn't clear of the error I was making was with foldl/3, if_/3, maplist/3, my lambda expression, clpz, or my logic -- or all of them!

Interesting point about max/2! The reason max/2 does not show up in the search results is that it is not a predicate, but an arithmetic expression supported by arithmetic constraints such as (#=)/2

For example, we have:

Oh, wow, I didn't even realize that arithmetic expressions were a category distinct from predicates until now. That makes sense! This is very motivating to help improve the discoverability of these concepts. The information is all there, and clearly documented -- hell, this is one of the few languages that actually has an ISO standard! -- but if_/3 there is anything this experience report shows, it's that it is easy to get overwhelmed and have difficulty pinpointing which resources are relevant and where to find them, and that isolating concepts and mastering them individually is very important before moving on to combinations of techniques.

Also, here is what I think is a better implementation of substrings:

With phrase/2 it's clearer what you are doing here, and also (\=)/2 is not monotonic in general, it's always better to use dif/2 to express disequality.

And here's an alternative to your non_repeat_subset/3 that doesn't need to convert chars to codes and use library(clpz) on them:

There are a few parts to this magic trick, which are intuitively obvious to experienced Prolog practitioners, but completely novel to novices -- and unfortunately they are so intuitive to experienced Prolog practitioners they are probably not aware that we are overlooking these very simple principles:

1. the first argument to if_/3 has an arrity of 3. There is a special _t category of predicates which have the truth value as the third argument, and that is the style of predicate required as the first argument for reif:if_/3. Writing these predicates well is something of an art, because writing the false case without using a defaulty representation takes some experience.
2. In lss_from_accumulated/3, note that the Acc is never touched in the second definition. It is implicitly bound via constraint in the first definition (something I realized in this SO answer):

%@    X = 3.
?- lss_from_accumulated([], X, 3).
%@    X = 3.

Note that doing this with only two arguments won't work:

And concerning the numbering of variables. If you start by 0 then this suggests that you are using some differential technique. Like a difference list. Or a state that "starts" at V0 and ends at V. Otherwise, do not use 0.

At least I'm finally able to answer the damn question, although lots of redundant choice points. Not sure I'm thrilled with it overall, but at least it's an answer, and the use of sort for nonrepetition testing means I can't make fully general queries, and I don't like that I had to resort to findall/3, but it is an answer.

Two big lessons I learned from this, so far.

First of all... dang, thats a really cool definition of substring, I'm gonna have to think about how that works. I think @bakaq mentioned that above but I'm just now appreciating.

And yeah this thread has been all over the place, I'm just continually trying to refine it until I'm somewhat happy with the code.

My previous effort I was unhappy that I had to realize all the substrings into a list with findall/3 in order to aggregate them to find the max length nonrepeating substring.

So the monstrosity I posted most recently was an effort to get the max without realizing the whole list.

However, looking upon this most hideous baby, I think my next effort will be to break it up into several DCGs composed together:

• substrings
• only nonrepeat substrings
• max length / max length substring

Of course, that raises the question if the performance or philosophy is in any way better than just using findall/3.

Still not 100% happy with it, but best so far. No redundant choice points, fully general. I would also be curious to know the performance characteristics, if the DCGs avoid realizing the entire list into memory until the very end (I'll ask in another discussion). There's probably some room to make this a little more concise, but at least I think it's pretty readable compared to my earlier effort.

It is a good idea to step back a little bit and just think about what you are trying to implement. Let's assume that we have implemented predicate list_longest_sublist/2 already, and it is monotonic, sound and correct! So consider the following query:

?- list_longest_sublist([A,B], L).

Now ask yourself what answer do you expect?

1. L=[A,B], dif:dif(A,B)
2. L=[A]; L=[B]
3. Both: A=B, L=[A]; L=[A,B], dif:dif(A,B)

Consider those variants in order:

1. Let's say our predicate gave only 1st answer, then to be consistent, what should it respond to the following query?

   ?- list_longest_sublist([A,B], L), [A,B] = "aa".

   It will respond false, which is not what we expect, we expect: L="a".

2. Ok, lets say our predicate gave 2nd answer, then what should it respond to the following query?

   ?- list_longest_sublist([A,B], L), [A,B] = "ab".

   If it will respond L="a" ; L="b" it will be incorrect, if it will respond false it will be unsound.

3. 3rd answer breaks an important invariant that lengths of all sub-lists should be the same, so I wont consider it.

What am I trying to say, is that relation that we claimed to have can't exist! We should either give up on some properties or either refuse to answer by throwing an exception or delay decision using coroutining (e.g. freeze/2, or when/2).

Here invariant is semantic in nature: English language meaning of word "longest" implies that lists [A] and [A,B] can't both be longest. This meaning of word "longest" is making me think that all sublists should have same length no matter what. The only thing that is sure in my example that length of longest sublist can't be less than 1.

Also while contemplating the meaning of word "longest" I came up with the following example:

?- list_longest_sublist([A,B|T], L).

Here we can say for sure only that sublist L shall have length more then 1, and that's all, so I would expect this goal to be frozen until more information about T is known.

To make it more concrete by invariant I mean the following query:

And I claim that it is impossible for list_longest_sublist/2 predicate to satisfy all the properties. We have to give up either on some properties, or reduce expectations for example don't expect that "invariant" to hold.

Whenever we are talking about pure relations we think about them as completely ground. No variables. The variables are "only" a convenient shortcut to represent infinitely many terms (or finitely many with certain constraints, think of X in 1..3). It seems that you mix the notion of maximum for such ground terms with other things. So from this viewpoint case 3 does make sense.
