Isobus++ News (5/24/2023)
Hello everyone!
In case there are new folks using the project, my name is Adrian, and I'm a maintainer of Isobus++, nice to meet you!
It's been around half a year since our last announcement, and since then Isobus++ has grown by thousands of lines and added lots of new, exciting, completely free, and open source features, such as:
The library is still sort of "pre-alpha" and in a general state of flux as we converge on what is shaping up to be a very nice architecture and style, so things may continue to change and occasionally break as we work, but we are continually making our way towards a "stable" release. Thank you for your patience as we update the structure. Going forward, you can expect to see us move away from so many static singletons to a more dynamic approach to CAN channel management. This should provide users with lots of flexibility they might not have today, which is exciting.
Our Name
Big announcement number 1 is that we've been asked to change our name by the AEF. A while back, a member of our community raised some concerns that ISOBUS is trademarked by AEF, and that is true, so we reached out to AEF about this, hoping to take a proactive approach to any concerns they might have. It turned out to be a good idea, as I received a reply from Norbert Schlingmann, General Manager at AEF where he said in part:
The big issue appears to be that they do not want people to think the AEF supports our project or is affiliated with them.
I would of course like to note publicly here, this project is not affiliated with AEF but nevertheless the decision has been made to comply with their request and choose a new name.
Tentatively, the new name will be
AgIsoStack++
for this project, which will allow us to distance ourselves from the ISOBUS trademark while retaining some hints of what our library is and what we do. We can also remove the "++" and replace it with other postfixes for variants of the library. For example, we could call a Rust version of this stack "AgIsoStack_rs" or something. GitHub should also automatically redirect people to the new name making the transition pretty smooth.Unless there's significant pushback on the new name, we'll plan to change branding and project name this weekend.
Thanks for your understanding on this.
Organization Account
Big announcement number 2 is that we're moving the repo to be under a GitHub organization. This does not mean that we're part of a company or anything, this is just a GitHub tool to help make contribution and repo grouping easier to manage.
Since the project has multiple contributors, we've had some difficulties when collaborating that we think can be improved by moving to an organization account as the owner of the project. This will give us several advantages:
The new organization is called "Open-Agriculture" and is located here https://github.com/Open-Agriculture
We'll add new members as needed of course. New contributors are welcome.
As we grow into a multi-repo organization, we may want to eventually expand how users can chat with us and the community and get support, kind of like AgOpenGPS (shoutout to them, haha). Let me know if this is something you think could be valuable. Discord has also been mentioned before as a possible place for this.
Upcoming Features
Besides those meta updates, there are lots of new features on the horizon, including:
Here are some other things that we might also get to, but are not as high of a priority:
candump
substitute essentially)As you can see there's a lot of work ahead of us, but as time goes on our stack will become a one-stop-shop for absolutely anything you might want to do on an ISOBUS.
Thanks
I'd like to thank everyone in the community who has been using the library and providing us feedback. Your feedback helps the library become more stable and work across more platforms with ease. If there are things you want to see added, or if you think something needs to be a higher priority for development, please feel free to open an issue or start a new discussion page.
Also, a huge thanks goes out to this project's sponsors. Your donations are reinvested 100% into new hardware and software tools to make this library better. For example, your donations up to this point have brought you improvements that include Rukosu TouCAN integration and MacOS support. Thank you for your investment in open source software that's free for everyone.
